Cheesy Garlic Bread
After I watched a tv series recently, I felt the urge to make a Vegan Cheesy Garlic Bread from the ground up. Yes, all the way from the kneading of flour to cheesy toppings. I can’t remember the tv show that I watched but at least I was inspired. Sometime after that, I saw a post from one of my favourite vegan brands Follow Your Heart and guess what? They made a cheesy vegan garlic bread that made my mouth water. At that point, I knew it was definitely a sign. I had to try my hand at it.
I Love Garlic Bread
Firstly, I had no idea that my first try at this would have been so good. My husband fell in love with and ate most of it. I’m not complaining, I love when others enjoy my food. There’s just something about the smell of freshly baked bread engulfing the entire house especially the kitchen. In addition, the smell of garlic baking is just life.
My Go-To Flour and Cheese
Secondly, even if you’re not a baker, this is a fairly easy recipe to follow and master. I used my favourite unbleached white flour from Bob’s Red Mill and one of my favourite vegan Mozzarella cheeses from Follow Your Heart. Of course the wonderful Earth Balance vegan butter had to make an appearance as well.
Cheesy and Garlicky
Thirdly, get those hands ready to knead some flour. I promise it’s not as tiring as it sounds. However, if you’re just not into it then feel free to buy some bread and just add the toppings. I really wanted this garlic bread to be cheesy and garlicky from the inside out so I went all out. I gave it a good knead but not too much as I didn’t want it too airy and fluffy. There was no garlic butter in the house so I mixed plain butter with grated garlic.
Ingredients:
-2 cups unbleached white all-purpose flour (plus some for dusting)
-1 tsp active dry yeast or instant yeast
-1/2 tsp sea salt
-1/2 tsp canjun seasoning (whatever seasoning you like)
-1 tbsp vegan butter
-1 tbsp grated garlic
-2 tbsp grated vegan mozzarella cheese
-3/4 cup warm water
Toppings:
-Grated vegan mozzarella cheese
-Grated garlic
-Vegan butter
Instructions:
-In a bowl, combine all the dry ingredients.
-Add the warm water to the dry ingredients and mix with fingers.
-Knead mixture into a ball while rubbing in the butter. I mixed the butter with the grated garlic before working it in.
-Turn dough onto a clean surface dusted with flour and continue kneading.
-Cover the dough with a clean cloth and leave to rest until it doubles in size.
-Preheat oven to 375ºF. Prepare your baking dish or tray. I rolled out my dough and put it into a buttered round oven glass dish. This dish comes with a cover which makes it easier for the vegan cheese to melt. Covering the dish or baking tray (if you use one) helps melt the vegan cheese like traditional cheese.
-Top off the bread with some more butter. You can either gently rub it on or melt it and brush it on. Sprinkle the grated garlic and grated cheese. Bake the bread for about 15 -20 minutes or until it’s fully baked. I stick mine with a skewer stick to make sure the inside is cooked. Sometimes the baking takes longer.
Cheers.
